Bridging The Gap: A Heavy Haul Case Study

3 DAYS | 5 TRUCKS | 1 ESCORT | 2 HIGHWAY PATROL | 1 ROUTE SURVEY

In modern infrastructure, the backbone of our highways and bridges is often woven with sturdy fibers of concrete bridge beams. These structural marvels provide the essential support that keeps our overpasses standing tall and our bridges spanning great distances. When our client needed to transfer fifteen bridge beams from a manufacturing yard to a construction site, they counted on our experienced heavy haul team at Jones Logistics (JoLo) to deliver.

THE CHALLENGE

As integral as they are to the fabric of our transportation networks, concrete bridge beams are also very heavy, and can be challenging to move. In fact, the concrete bridge beams that our client needed to haul came in at about 133,000 pounds each and measured 133 feet long- that's five times heavier and longer than the average truckload! * As a result, the beams would need to be carried one per truck across approximately forty miles from Vinton, Louisiana to Iowa, Louisiana.

THE SOLUTION

Our heavy haul team wasted no time mapping out a plan. We started with our trusted carrier network to find a partner with five available drivers and five steerable dollies. Our team facilitated constant communication with the carrier as they lined up escorts and applied for oversize and overweight permits. We also orchestrated a safe and efficient place for drivers to turn around and traverse the opposite side of the highway, directly facing westward traffic. The project was completed in three days through the collaboration of five drivers, two police escorts, and our heavy haul team. All fifteen of the bridge beams were delivered safely and without error.
